Chad
Since April 2023, more than 818,000 people have fled to eastern Chad to escape the war in Sudan. According to the UN, over 83 per cent are women and children, and 71 per cent report having experienced human rights violations during displacement, including sexual and gender-based violence.
Sexual violence has been used as a weapon of war and genocide both in Sudan and against fleeing civilians in neighbouring countries. While the need for urgent support is mounting, existing services remain severely limited and underfunded.
In 2025, we began working with Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) in Aboutengué and Adré refugee camps to support a more reparative response to sexual violence, acting as a bridge between humanitarian actors, survivors, and their communities living in the camps.
We also partner with survivor-led organisations in both camps, some initially established in Sudan, to support women and children in critical need. Activities include medical referrals and psychological care, and awareness-raising on gender-based and conflict-related violence. Importantly, GSF also supports safe spaces, where community-based activities are held (music sessions, peer discussions, and psychosocial support). Family-oriented activities are also organised for children affected by conflict-related sexual violence – a group that is often overlooked. To support survivors in rebuilding their lives, livelihood activities like sewing, soap and juice making are also offered by our partners.
We lived through a terrible experience. Our minds are terribly affected. We firstly need to come together...to find solutions together and to support each other.

In the capital N’Djamena, our Chadian partner Association Jeunesse pour la Paix et la Non-Violence (AJPNV) also supports survivors with community integration and raising awareness of their right to reparation.

Emergency support in Sudan
GSF’s work in Chad is part of its regional ‘Sudan Hub’ strategy, aimed at expanding our activities in and around Sudan to address the dire situation for survivors of conflict-related sexual violence and their right to reparation.
As part of our support, in 2025 we provided small emergency grants to 23 survivors in the Mellit area of North Darfur who had been held captive by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
We have also participated in consultations on accountability with the Fact-Finding Mission for Sudan (FFM), where we presented our approach to survivor‑centred reparations. This was followed by a focused discussion with FFM members and a written submission outlining key priorities for Sudan: establishing a unified registry of survivors of conflict-related sexual violence and other violations, co‑creating reparations and interim measures with survivors, and financing reparations through seized assets.
